Guasha is a traditional Chinese treatment for some ills by scraping the patient, it is an effective way. But in the movie Guasha, this treatment becomes the clash between the two cultures.
Datong Xu is a Chinese immigrant who works for a company that develops the computer games. Xu has a general family like others. He has an immigrant wife, an American-born son. He has American dreams like other immigrants, and he also love his family.
One day, Xu’s father goes to the America from Beijing. He is a traditional Chinese old man, and he loves his grandson Dennis very much. Dennis feels sick one day, so the grandfather guasha for him because the old man can’t speak English and can’t understand the specification of the medicine. But the doctors think the scar leaved by Guasha is the evidence of the abuse, so they don’t allow Dennis go home and sue the Xu for abuse. So Mr. and Ms. Xu begin to strive for their son.
Nobody knows what is guasha and nobody knows the theory of it, include the Xu’s boss and best friend. So, for Dennis, the grandfather decides to back to China, and Xu has to quit his job and separate with his wife.
In this movie, the reason of this ridiculous is the culture conflicts, and the difference concepts towards one object.
The first conflict is the Chinese traditional treatment—guasha. All Chinese think guasha is a common action to cure the disease, but no American knows it. And there is seldom American want to know it. So, Xu was believed abuse his son. He can’t defend for himself although he is innocent. But finally, Xu’s best friend experienced the treatment of guasha from a traditional Chinese doctor and known what is guasha, and he proved that Xu is innocent. So, it is only communication can eliminate the misunderstandings. We have no rights to evaluate a culture unless we know it. Similarity, if we want to know a culture, we have to try our best to experience it.
There also some culture conflicts in other aspects, for instance, the different opinions toward the piety and the “face”. From the movie, we can see the different opinions to the piety, or the relationships of the parents and their kids. In the movie, Xu tells the judge that it is he guasha for Dennis, because he is a fealty man, and he wants his father can live in the U.S., while Xu’s father insist to back to home when he knows the truth, because he won’t to become the burden of his son. But Xu’s boss think their actions are strange, for in the American culture, the relationships of the parents and children are not like the Chinese. In the movie, Xu hit Dennis to give his friend face, for Dennis hit his son, but his friend can’t understand this action. And it is a difference of two cultures.
And, in the movie, we can see there are also some people misinterpret the Chinese culture on purpose, and hold some racial prejudice views. So, we should not only experience other cultures, but to develop and expand our culture, to let foreigners know and understand us. After all, all cultures need to communications.
