在《哈姆雷特》這一不朽劇作中，始終存在著善良與邪惡等一系列激烈的矛盾沖突。哈姆雷特作為該劇的主要主角，他的命運不可避免地處于這激烈矛盾沖突的漩渦之中。身為王子的哈姆雷特被莎翁塑造為生命之美的典型，他年輕英俊，堅毅勇敢，熱愛自己的國家，熱愛自己的父王和母后，有著心愛的戀人奧菲莉婭，能夠說，他的`生命正處于人生最完美的時刻。然而，這完美的生命時光瞬息之間又消失了，他是處于一種什么樣的環境之中呢?我們看到，當時的丹麥宮廷一片混亂，老王個性地駕崩，王后改嫁新王，國外敵軍壓境，國內群情激憤、一觸即發，而宮中卻在通宵達旦地酗酒取樂，這一切，都在哈姆雷特年輕完美的生命中投下了巨大的陰影，從而使他郁郁寡歡，認為人間但是是“一個荒蕪不治的花園，長滿了惡毒的莠草”，這些已經為王子年輕的生命注入了杯具的因素。
隨著老王鬼魂的出現，宮廷內幕的揭開，謀殺罪行的暴露，王子心中烈火的燃起，杯具的帷幕拉開了……應對陰險奸詐的新王，哈姆雷特開始了孤身復仇的行動：為了復仇，他失手殺死了戀人的父親;為了復仇，他佯裝瘋狂失去了深愛的情人;為了復仇，他對軟弱的母親冷言相向;為了復仇，他忍受著失去友情的痛苦。最后，在一場血淋淋的宮廷決斗中，他雖然殺死了陰險狡詐的新王，但自己的生命也結束在這“牢獄”般的宮廷中。
魯迅以前說過：“杯具就是將人生的有價值的東西毀滅給人看。”哈姆雷特作為一個深受廣大群眾愛戴的王子，他身上具備整頓局勢、治理國家、報仇雪恨的潛質。然而應對著以陰險奸詐的新王為代表的強大的封建勢力，作為一個資產階級人文主義者，他始終把這種和人民緊密相連的事業看做個人的仇恨而孤軍奮戰，因此，他的杯具既是真善美與邪惡力量相沖突的杯具，也是一個人文主義者時代的杯具。
