1911年辛亥革命以后，清朝統治被推翻，孫中山在南京建立中華民國政府。各省都督府代表在南京召開會議，討論歷法問題。會上達成了“行夏歷，所以順農時;從西歷，所以便統計”的共識，決定使用公歷，把公歷1月1日定做“新年”，把農歷正月初一稱做“春節”，但并未正式命名和推廣。1949年9月27日，中國人民政治協商會議第一屆全體會議通過使用“公歷紀年法”，將公歷1月1日定為“元旦”，把農歷正月初一定名為“春節”，并規定春節放假三天，讓人們熱烈地慶祝農歷新年。
在兩千多年的歷史進程中，我國的新年禮俗經歷了萌芽、定型、裂變、轉型的發展過程。
